Environment committee weighs H2Ohio grant application to restore Krause Pond after dam removal

Director Pickett briefed the Environment & Parks committee on Resolution 2024‑R35, which would authorize the mayor to apply to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ H2Ohio wetland grant program for the Krause Pond project. Pickett said the Krause Pond dam is classified as a hazard and that removing or modifying the dam to restore streams and floodplain habitat is likely the most logical option.
“Removing the dam… and doing proper stream restoration” will be the focus of the application, Pickett said, adding that stream restoration can improve downstream water quality and create floodplain and habitat benefits. Staff said there are two tributary streams feeding the impoundment area and that restoration would include vegetation and flood‑plain reconnection.
Committee members asked whether the grant is a full grant or requires a local match; Pickett said he believes H2Ohio grants are likely match grants but did not have a definitive figure and will bring cost estimates to the next meeting. The committee agreed to take time and discuss the request again when staff has the application details.
No vote was taken; staff will return with the draft application, estimated ask and match requirements.
