Oak Ridge City Council voted unanimously on first readings on Nov. 11 to update multiple technical and safety codes, including adoption of the 2024 editions of the International Fire Code, International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Mechanical Code, International Property Maintenance Code and the 2024 International Plumbing Code, together with adoption of the 2023 National Electrical Code for electrical standards.
City staff explained the updates are part of a coordinated package to keep the city within the six-year window referenced for code adoption and to align local requirements with state and national standards. Staff said these changes do not alter basic sprinkler or alarm requirements in ways that will create significant new costs for builders, and that the package will help the city maintain favorable ISO ratings.
Council approved each item on first reading by unanimous votes recorded during the meeting; several items are scheduled for additional readings where required by ordinance.
Why it matters: code updates affect building professionals, contractors and property owners by changing technical standards, compliance requirements and permitting review. Staff emphasized the updates will help the city remain current and safe while accommodating a busy construction climate.
Next steps: items advanced per the city's ordinance schedule to subsequent readings where applicable.
