The Newell City Council unanimously approved plans for a 19-by-12-foot addition to the baseball concession stand at the city ballfield during a special meeting on April 13, 2026. Park Board representative Tim Hanson presented the project, saying the Youth League Association will cover costs and that the structure would sit on city property.
Council members agreed to require a building permit for record-keeping while waiving the associated fee. The motion to approve the project was made by Billy Henrich, seconded by Larry Nielsen, and carried on a unanimous voice vote.
Mayor Justin Lyman called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. and the concession-stand item was added to the agenda by motion before discussion. The council did not attach additional conditions beyond the standard permit documentation. The council’s approval allows the Park Board and Youth League to proceed with design and construction steps subject to the city’s permitting process.
The project aims to serve youth baseball activity at the city park; funding is coming from the Youth League Association rather than the city budget. The council’s decision waives the permit fee but preserves the requirement that the permit be completed and filed for municipal records, which city staff said is necessary for code compliance and future inspections.
The meeting adjourned at 5:57 p.m.
