Rutherford County commissioners elect Brian King as chairman, approve vice chair and county bonds

The Rutherford County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 2, 2024 elected Commissioner Brian King as board chairman and moved to install Alan Toney as vice chairman, then approved the meeting agenda and authorized required bonds for several county officials before adjourning.

Board clerk (S5) opened the meeting and introduced the item for election of the chairman. A motion was made to nominate Brian King; the nomination was seconded and members indicated 'I' by voice/raised-hand vote with no recorded opposition and Commissioner Brian King was declared chairman. "Are there any other nominations? If there be no other nominations, would all of those in favor ... indicate by an 'I'," the clerk asked during the roll call for the nomination.

A nomination for vice chairman followed. A commissioner (S4) moved that Alan Toney be elected vice chairman; the motion was seconded, the question was called and members voted by raised hands with no recorded opposition. The board then moved to approve the meeting agenda by motion and voice vote.

During the agenda process, a commissioner (S4) explained that state law requires the board to approve bonds for a list of county officials. S4 moved "to approve all the bonds for the county officials as presented," and the motion was seconded and carried. The commissioner read aloud positions included in the packet: finance director(s), the county manager, the sheriff (identified in the record as Richard Deese), the revenue director and the social services director.

The meeting concluded after a motion to adjourn was made, seconded and carried.
