Rutherford County commissioners approve routine items, hear fund-balance and farmland updates

At their Sept. 3 meeting, the Rutherford County Board of Commissioners approved the agenda and several routine actions, reappointed an airport appeals board member, authorized a re-auction of a county parcel, and heard presentations on county fund-balance policy, farmland preservation and child-protection efforts.
The Rutherford County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 3 approved the meeting agenda and consent items, reappointed Wiley Thomas to the airport appeals board and authorized a new electronic auction for a county-owned Cedar Street parcel after the winning bidder failed to close.
The board also voted to approve a package of budget amendments that included grant-funded software for essential personnel services, a community college roof repair transfer, truing up restricted ARPA funds for a soccer complex and repurposing $3.5 million of ARPA-directed funds to purchase and renovate a school-owned building.
Those routine votes followed three substantive presentations: a fund-balance briefing from financial advisers DEC Associates, an update on the county’s farmland preservation plan from Director Brandon Higgins, and the annual child protection and child-fatality prevention report from DSS Director Amanda Hunt.
During the meeting Chair (speaker 1) called for the board’s will on procedural items; motions were made and seconded from the dais and approved by voice vote. The board also authorized county staff to negotiate and execute terms for a three-year maintenance contract for a SAM storage device used by 911 operations.
The meeting concluded after the commissioners accepted the child protection team’s annual report and received a tax collector’s report posted on the county website. The board then moved, seconded and adjourned.
Next steps noted during the meeting include staff follow-up on the proposed fund-balance policy and early planning for the County’s farmland-preservation outreach events.
