Urbana to award 25 arts grants from $98,000; notifications and a grantee celebration planned

Staff reported that the city received 50 applications in the 2026 arts-grant cycle, with applicants requesting a combined $186,025. The Arts and Culture Program said $98,000 was available for awards and that 25 arts grants were funded this year. Notification letters were being sent the day of the meeting and staff planned a press release and a PDF of short descriptions to post online.
The commission was invited to a ‘sneak peek’ celebration for grantees on June 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Gallery Art Barn, 119 West Main Street, Downtown Urbana, and commissioners were asked to indicate whether they could attend and whether they could help present or highlight grantees during the program.
Staff described use of Neighborly grant software as helpful for applicants and administration and said many current grantees are wrapping up projects from the 2025 cycle. Commissioners discussed opportunities to steward and protect public art, noting minor vandalism on utility box murals can be cleaned and asking the public to report damage so staff can plan maintenance.
