Board approves math coaching contracts and renews major textbook licenses

The Raleigh County Board of Education on July 6 approved multiple curriculum purchases and license renewals aimed at standardizing instruction across the county.

The board approved a contract with Curriculum Associates for Ready Classroom math coaching to serve Stratton, Coal City and Bradley elementary schools. Presenter Valerie said Stratton and Hollywood had improved by roughly 10 percentage points in math scores after the coaching model was used; the contract will provide an on‑site math coach for 15 days delivered across three separate weeks and will be funded through teacher leadership induction funds. The superintendent recommended approval and the board voted 5–0 to accept the agreement.

The board also approved renewal of McGraw Hill licenses for high‑school mathematics and renewals and consumables for middle‑school math, and agreed to add Algebra I to the 8th grade course list as an option for eligible students. The superintendent clarified that Algebra I will count as high‑school credit, is not an honors course and students may not retake it unless they fail; the board approved the purchase by voice vote.

Separately, the board adopted Goodheart‑Willcox Publishing for health and wellness materials in middle and high schools. The adoption includes initial textbook purchases and licensing; the presenter said the upfront cost is higher this year due to textbook purchases, with lower recurring costs in future years. Board members discussed the need for consistent countywide curriculum and teacher involvement in selection; the motion carried 5–0.
