Brentwood swears in Ed Birney as new fire chief

Mayor Dimock administered the oath of office and noted the appointment date as Jan. 20, 2026. The mayor and members said they were pleased the city could promote from within after the previous chief, Ronnie Cottrell, departed for a position on the west side of the state.
Mayor Dimock and Alderman Plovka said they had met with Ed Birney to discuss his vision for the department and praised his qualifications. The mayor said that grooming internal candidates has allowed the city to fill leadership vacancies without an external search.
No formal vote was required; the matter was ceremonial and completed during the announcements portion of the meeting. The board congratulated Chief Birney and took a group photograph.
