The City Commission of the City of South Miami voted unanimously Aug. 20 to name the gymnasium at the Gibson Belfer Community Center after former Commissioner Louis J. Gill.
Commissioner Josh Liebman opened the item with a formal tribute recalling Gill’s public service from 2018 to 2022, his community involvement and decades of civic engagement. Mayor Fernandez, Commissioner Corey and others spoke in support; the family and friends of Gill joined by phone and in the chamber to accept the recognition. The clerk recorded a 4‑0 roll call to add the resolution to the agenda and, later in the meeting, to adopt it.
The resolution directs that the gymnasium at the Gibson Belfer Community Center, located at 5800 Southwest 66th Street, be named the “Commissioner Louis J. Gill Gymnasium.” Commissioners said the honor recognizes Gill’s years of municipal service and local leadership. Commissioner Gill thanked the commission and family members who joined the meeting.
The naming was handled as an add‑on item earlier in the agenda. The city attorney and staff clarified the procedural steps and confirmed that the resolution imposes no additional budgetary obligations beyond the naming and recordation of the proclamation.
The commission said the recognition is intended to preserve Gill’s legacy in the city’s civic facilities and to acknowledge his service to residents and local organizations. The resolution passed on a voice and roll‑call vote of 4‑0. The commission’s statement and the proclamation were entered into the meeting record.
