Acting fire chief requests feasibility funds to address Cross Street station problems

Councilwoman Lefredo asked the acting fire chief to explain a proposed $25,000 expenditure to address needs at the Cross Street Fire Station. The acting chief said the 50‑year‑old building has repeated water intrusion, mold complaints and inadequate ventilation and living spaces now that more staff are housed there 24/7.
“We now have 8 in it 24 7 ... Over the last year, the conditions have gotten so bad that every time it rains, I have water intrusion. We did have health and safety complaints for mold issues, inadequate ventilation,” the acting fire chief said, describing the urgent facility deficiencies.
Staff told council the $25,000 would fund a feasibility study and specifications needed to pursue state Urban Act grant funding; the staff member noted South Fire District has successfully used Urban Act grants and the application will include architectural and engineering fees and construction cost estimates. Staff said their preference is to add a second floor and living quarters rather than increase the building footprint, and they emphasized minimizing tax impacts.
Council members suggested engaging nearby Wesleyan University if the footprint needs adjustment. The discussion was presented as an informational briefing and council indicated the item may be added to the agenda through amendments for formal consideration and potential funding action.
