Sean Nugent, chair of the volunteer Preston Redevelopment Agency, briefed the board on the long‑running cleanup and oversight of the former State Hospital property and reported that hazardous soils and structures have been remediated according to state and federal guidelines.
Nugent said the property is composed of several differently sized parcels and that the Mohegan Tribe has expressed interest in acquiring seven parcels totaling approximately 388 acres. He said the tribe’s overall design plan has not yet been submitted or released and that a small parcel near the bridge has been discussed as a possible site for senior housing; he emphasized that "no high‑density housing will be included" in those early mentions.
Nugent reminded the board that any elements of a future development plan will require review and approval by the appropriate Town of Preston boards and commissions and that it will likely be years before actual property development occurs. He distributed a presentation to the board documenting the PRA’s work to date.
