Preston presents SBAC results and DESSA screening finds about 6% of students need social‑emotional intervention

At the Feb. 10 Preston Board of Education meeting, PVMS Principal Ray Bernier presented results of the district’s SBAC testing, with assistance from Michele Han of LEARN and materials prepared with Chris Pickett. Bernier said overall Preston students are performing well compared with neighboring schools and that the district will use the data to develop strategies and interventions and to inform the joint Strategic Plan with the town.
Separately, Craig King, Director of Student Services, reported results from the first round of DESSA (a universal screening tool for social and emotional competencies). King said initial screening conducted in December 2024 indicates about 6% of students currently require instructional intervention involving social workers or school psychologists; re‑screening is scheduled for March and May to measure change and inform services.
The presentation and screening results will be used to shape interventions and are slated to be integrated into the Strategic Plan goals and benchmarks that the administration plans to add. Board members were invited to attend Read Across America and other school events mentioned during the principals’ reports.
