Newell council roundup: library grant, golf-course moves, Corn Belt fiber update and routine approvals

The Newell City Council handled a range of routine municipal matters at its March 2 meeting, approving several motions related to recreation, library services and community events and receiving an update on a local broadband project.
Golf Course Manager Ginger Lyman asked the council to match reciprocal membership rates with Fonda so members in either town may purchase membership in the other at the same rate; the council approved the request (motion by Bill Henrich, second by Larry Nielsen, all ayes). The council also approved leasing two additional rental carts for the upcoming season at an estimated cost of about $1,400 for the season (motion by Nielsen, second by Taylor, all ayes) and approved donating a single golf membership for the Fire Department's silent auction for the 2027 season (motion by Nielsen, second by Taylor, all ayes). Personnel Committee recommendations for clubhouse positions were approved (motion by Quinten Robinson, second by Steve Taylor, all ayes). Manager Ginger Lyman said a local band, "Heritage," is booked for an April 4 clubhouse event.
Library representative Landgraf reported the library is piloting streaming services through the State Library of Iowa and is using an Enrich Iowa grant of roughly $1,200 to expand the "Library of Things" (items such as a metal detector and household tools). A new photo printer has been purchased and staff discussed adding a bicycle pump to the Library of Things inventory.
Mayor Justin Lyman reported Corn Belt's fiber installation will proceed block by block once weather allows; Corn Belt will coordinate utility locates with Public Works and expects customer activation by late summer with a public informational meeting to be scheduled closer to completion.
Clerk Heather Copp announced Newell received an Iowa Work Zone Sign Package Award (one of 10 communities statewide) expected in mid-April. Danielle Bolhmann of Hwy 7 Service requested the annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 4 and the council approved a $150 city donation (motion by Bill Henrich, second by Larry Nielsen, all ayes). After Clerk Copp arrived the council approved the consent agenda — minutes, claims, and the treasurer's report listing Revenues MTD $93,095.79 and Expenses MTD $67,810.84 — and adjourned at 7:27 p.m.
