Council hears requests for higher cemetery budget, stump grinding and golf course needs

The council reviewed cemetery and parks maintenance needs during the Jan. 21 meeting and heard requests from golf course staff for operational items.
Public Works Director Doug Lange recommended raising the cemetery maintenance budget from $20,000 to $25,000 to cover wet years or increased burial and maintenance activity; year-to-date cemetery spending is $13,000. Lange noted Tree Park has roughly 30 remaining trees and 56 stumps; the golf course also has remaining stumps from earlier tree removals and staff asked that golf-course stumps be included in the stump-grinding plan as budget allows.
Golf course staff (Ginger Lyman and Chad Wilson) said a cooler unit is being purchased this fiscal year and requested future budget consideration for replacement tables and chairs. Wilson said he plans to rent an overseeder or drill to reseed larger damaged areas after a wet season and asked council to consider adding two more golf carts to the fleet. Staff and the Men’s & Women’s leagues proposed a cost-sharing plan for new sponsor signs with detachable plates; the leagues offered to each pay one-third of the cost if the city covers the remaining third.
Council did not adopt final budget changes at the meeting; staff were asked to include the requests in upcoming budget planning.
