Warrensburg task force adopts Mayor’s Monarch Pledge actions, lays out Earth Week plan

The Energy and Sustainability Task Force adopted the action items tied to the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge and outlined a series of events and outreach steps to support pollinators and native plants.
Members said the pledge actions include staging a proclamation in early September during a Turkey Foot Prairie volunteer day, partnering with the UCM Environmental Club and Master Gardeners to support native-plant sales and seed distribution, and working with local gardeners to create pollinator-friendly demonstration beds near the middle school and other public sites. The task force also discussed placing interpretive signs on city property if milkweed plantings are possible and encouraging developers to increase native-plant use in municipal landscaping.
The task force set an Earth Week schedule for April 21–25. Planned activities include a Callery pear buyback at Mitchell Street Farm on Tuesday, April 21, with organizers requesting 35 native trees; recognition of Earth Day on April 22; Arbor Day activities and a proclamation on April 24 (location to be determined, possibly the rose garden); and a Moonlight Market and Master Gardener plant sale on April 25. Members noted they need to select a date that week for a bush-honeysuckle removal volunteer event at Lions Lake and discussed providing a volunteer thank-you gift.
Angela Palmer of CEA was noted as participating on the Highway 13 Butterfly Trail committee; the task force said signage for the trail is expected soon. Suzy Latare, the task force chair and City Council liaison, said she will follow up on municipal planting-ordinance changes with a colleague discussed during the meeting.
The measures are planning and coordination steps; the task force did not adopt new regulations or spend funds at this meeting. The group scheduled follow-up work and outreach to partners and volunteers ahead of the April events.
