Schools outline CTE expansion, safety upgrades and a list of building needs as county weighs courthouse and other projects

Dr. Armstrong, speaking for the school division, told the board that facilities are a "retention tool" for staff and that the district's top priorities include a CTE addition, modernization of instructional spaces and several system-level upgrades (HVAC, boilers, chiller controls). The school leader said the planned CTE portion of bond funding is about $18,200,000 on paper and that the division is working to refine costs and phasing.
On safety, the school division described modern, portable weapons-detection systems used elsewhere in the region and estimated an initial equipment/installation rollout (multiple entrances/units) in the neighborhood of $500,000, plus staffing to operate units during events. "They're portable. They're designed intelligently to detect, you know, guns and knives," the superintendent said, and staff recommended community engagement before deployment.
School staff also described near-term projects already encumbered (chiller replacements, roof repairs, HVAC improvements) and longer-term issues (Byrd and Randolph elementary maintenance and eventual replacement planning). Dr. Armstrong emphasized the need to coordinate school facility decisions with county projects (courthouse and old Beechland Elementary reuse) to optimize space, transportation and future land-use decisions.
Next steps: schools will continue space and enrollment studies, seek community input about safety measures and return with refined cost and scope estimates for CTE, stadium/athletic field considerations and building-renovation phasing.
