The Danbury Planning Commission on March 19 voted to issue positive referrals to the City Council for two Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) easement requests to install rectangular rapid‑flashing beacons intended to improve crosswalk visibility and pedestrian safety.
Deputy Planning Director Jen Freminger explained that the Park Avenue beacon (near Park Avenue School) requires approximately 125 square feet of city right‑of‑way and that the Rector Park crossing beacon (on Anhep Road) requires approximately 271 square feet because both sides of the crosswalk are within city property. Staff recommended positive referrals for both items; commissioners asked procedural questions about why the state was installing the devices on city roads and were told CTDOT is administering a program to deliver and maintain the beacons.
The commission moved, seconded and voted to return positive referrals on both easements to the City Council. Staff noted no objection and recommended the referrals as a way to expedite state installation of safety devices.
What happens next: The City Council will consider CTDOT’s easement requests; if approved, CTDOT will install and maintain the rectangular rapid‑flashing beacons at the identified crossings.
