Montgomery County Council honors Poolesville students behind Runway STEM app

Councilmember Marilyn Balcom on Nov. 12 presented a proclamation honoring Poolesville High School seniors Jacob Lee and Brian Young for developing Runway, a mobile app that delivers a daily, bite‑sized STEM lesson and short quiz.
“Jacob and Brian began working on this app in January 2024 and by September the app was active in the Apple App Store,” Balcom told the Council, inviting the students and their administrator to the dais. Daphne Williams, an administrator at Poolesville High School, called the students’ work “a positive impact on their community.”
Jacob Lee said Runway launched in September 2024 and “we're really fortunate to have over 1,000 downloads in a multitude of countries,” and that the team is working with student contributors across the county. Brian Young described the app as a way for students to sample advanced subjects “one day at a time” and to spark curiosity.
Balcom said the Council had printed a QR code for the app and encouraged residents to download it; Jacob added the app is available now on the Apple App Store and an Android version is in development. Balcom said the students are working with Montgomery County Public Schools to explore classroom use of Runway.
The proclamation commended the students’ initiative and was signed on behalf of the Council. The Council moved on to other business after the photograph opportunity.
