The New York State Assembly convened for a floor session and the presiding officer confirmed a quorum before members moved to dispense with further reading of the journal of Sunday, May 17; that motion was approved without objection.
Members were told to expect committee activity: Ways and Means and Rules were called to meet to produce a calendar for floor consideration. Speaker 1 announced bills slated for consent: calendar No. 216 (by Mister Braunstein), calendar No. 309 (by Miss Jackson) and calendar No. 368 (by Mister McDonough). He also identified items on the debate list, including calendar No. 271 (by Miss Kellis) and calendar No. 24 (by Miss Cruz), and warned that a conference may be needed after floor work concludes.
Clerk and floor staff reported a housekeeping motion by Mister Otis concerning page 29, calendar No. 280, bill number A10132A. The clerk stated, “The amendments are received and adopted,” indicating the chamber accepted the proposed changes on that motion.
Members were directed that several standing committees would meet off the floor to expedite business; the committees named were alcoholism, banks, consumer affairs, education, judiciary, libraries and local government. The presiding officer asked committee members to remain close to the chamber so they could return quickly to the floor if needed.
On procedural motions later in the session, Miss People Stokes moved to place the house at ease; the motion carried and the house stood at ease as committees convened.
The session also included multiple ceremonial recognitions and introductions, after which committee work continued.
