Pontoosuc Lake Park plan includes stairs for lake access, bank stabilization and wetland conversion

Jim McGrath of the City of Pittsfield presented a southside accessibility and stabilization project for Pontoosuc Lake Park to the Community Preservation Committee on March 16, 2026.
McGrath described two principal elements: stair access from the bank down to the lake at two locations and a staircase at the end of a boardwalk to improve lake water access. He reviewed prior improvements, described necessary bank stabilization work, and said the plan calls for native vegetation in the boardwalk area. He added that the former city beach is planned to be turned into a vegetated wetland.
McGrath told the committee the project team hopes to begin construction in the fall subject to permitting. Committee members asked about timeline and permitting constraints; no vote was taken on March 16.
