Fire Chief John Rogers told the June 22 council meeting that the department had lost two volunteers: Jeff Michaels, an administrative prevention volunteer who began serving March 6, 2024, and retired Auburn Volunteer Fire Department Battalion Chief John Fee, who died after a long illness.
Rogers outlined Michaels’s contributions, including coordinating the Baltimore Ravine shaded fuelbreak project, assisting with RFP development and quarterly reporting, and helping secure a $15,000 California Fire Foundation grant that enabled canopy and roadway thinning work in a Robey Point neighborhood. Rogers also described Fee’s longtime mentorship and coordination of historical records for the Hook and Ladder Company No. 1.
Rogers asked the council to adjourn the meeting in memory of both volunteers; the council agreed and extended condolences to their families. Rogers said Fee’s memorial is scheduled for June 27 at 11 a.m. at the Auburn Elks Lodge and asked the council and community to keep the families in their thoughts and prayers.
