Board grants 1-foot fence-height variance for Salina Grove homeowner

The Green Board of Zoning Appeals on Nov. 21 granted a 1-foot fence-height variance to homeowner Johnny Brost, 1240 Salina Grove, allowing a 4-foot ornamental fence along a second frontage more than 20 feet from the property line.
Brost told the board the additional height is needed to contain a large dog and to match a neighboring fence. “So at this point, we're requesting to do a 4 foot fence the entire perimeter,” he said, adding the fence will be black wrought-iron-style aluminum installed by a local contractor.
The chair asked whether a 3-foot fence could suffice; Brost replied the neighbor already has a 4-foot fence and that a lower fence would not keep the dog contained. The board had no further questions from members or student representatives.
A committee member moved to approve the 1-foot variance; another member seconded. The clerk called the roll and the members present voted yes, approving the variance and allowing Brost to proceed with the project.
The variance was granted under the Board’s authority to consider exceptions to GCO chapter 157, planning and development (referenced during the hearing as section 157.875(c)). Brost was told to follow any permitting steps required by the city before construction.
The board moved on to the next agenda item after the vote.
