Council approves Gentry Park phase 2 funding and awards construction contract

The Bridgeton City Council on Aug. 21 approved a resolution supporting the Parks & Recreation Department’s application for Municipal Park Commission funds for phase 2 improvements at Gentry Park and later adopted an ordinance authorizing a $578,817.48 contract for park improvements.

Councilmember Wissing moved discussion of Resolution R24‑03 supporting the city’s application for municipal park funds, saying the city "desires to continue the park improvements of the 50 year old Gentry Park" and the resolution passed by voice vote.

At second reading the council considered Bill 64‑52, which authorizes the mayor and city clerk to execute a contract substantially in the form attached with Parkscape Solutions for playground and park improvements at Gentry Park in the amount of $578,817.48. The ordinance became 24‑38 following a roll-call vote of 5–0.

Parks and recreation director Brendan Kane told the council that existing play equipment slated for replacement is being prepared for sale on the government auction site to offset disposal costs and that contractors are expected to begin work in the coming weeks. Kane also noted scheduling for summer-concert events and pool season closings tied to park facility timing.

Several councilmembers praised the project as an inclusive-play initiative. "The Inclusive Playground is not something you... see everywhere," Councilmember Wetsching said, describing the park as a way to help young children in wheelchairs play with peers.

Next steps: staff will coordinate contractor start dates and project logistics under the awarded contract; the resolution supports seeking the grant funding that will contribute local match to the project.
