Preston BOE advances $16.02 million FY26 budget to Board of Finance; schedules public hearing and referendum dates

The Preston Board of Education voted on March 10 to forward a proposed FY26 school budget totaling $16,020,069 to the Board of Finance, after the Finance Committee and board made reductions and approved advancing the plan for further review.
Director of Finance Cindy Varricchio presented the January year-to-date budget report, which the board accepted unanimously. Varricchio said the district finished last fiscal year with $105,000 placed in a non-lapsing account; the account will appear on town books but the board of education will have full access.
Dr. Roy Seitsinger said the FY26 budget before the board shows a $988,542 increase over the prior year, and that $341,679 has been reduced from the version presented to the BOE. He added that roughly 90% of the budget is fixed costs. Key next dates: the Board of Finance presentation is scheduled for March 27; the Board of Selectmen will present its budget to the Board of Finance on April 2; a public hearing is set for April 24; the town meeting is May 8; and the referendum is scheduled for May 22.
After discussion, the board moved to accept and forward the FY26 budget to the Board of Finance. The motion was made by Cindy Luty and seconded by Deborah Burke-Grabarek; Nicole Serra, Michael Hinton and Megan Gallant voted in favor, and Courtney Ennis abstained. The motion carried.
Board members also noted that several capital projects will be reviewed at an upcoming Board of Finance meeting; the board did not take final action on capital project specifics at the March 10 meeting.
