Cayce — Council unanimously approved a bid award Wednesday to rebuild the engine of the city's 2007 Mack sanitation truck after staff reported the vehicle experienced a catastrophic engine failure.
City Manager Tracy Hegler told council the truck had 131,000 miles and 21,266 engine hours. Staff solicited two quotes for a remanufactured engine with a three‑year, 350,000‑mile warranty: Vanguard Truck Center quoted $35,494 and Shealy Truck Center quoted $35,214. Hegler said Shealy was the lowest responsive bidder and familiar to the city.
Mayor Pro‑Tem James E. Jenkins moved to authorize Shealy Truck Center to complete the engine repairs not to exceed $35,214, with funds to come from the city's unrestricted fund balance; Council Member Phil Carter seconded and the motion passed by unanimous roll call.
Hegler said the repair was unbudgeted and staff will first use any savings in sanitation line items before drawing from the fund balance; council approved the contingency to ensure the truck could be returned to service promptly.
