The Glen Rock Board of Education opened its Committee of the Whole meeting with student presentations and multiple staff recognitions, honoring teachers and educational specialists across the district.
Charlotte Castro, a graduating fifth grader from Alexander Hamilton School, told the board about recent field trips and school traditions, including a 5th-grade “clap out” and an all-school pool party. “Here are some updates from Hamilton,” Castro said, describing trips to Tenafly Nature Center, Sterling Hill, Turtle Park Zoo and Liberty Hall.
Board members and administrators then introduced the district’s teachers and staff of the year. A speaker presented Michelle Bautista as Byrd School’s teacher of the year and noted her enrollment in the Teach Asian American Stories fellowship and leadership in inquiry-based social studies instruction. “To say that she is adored by her students and parents is an understatement,” the presenter said.
Denise Ianniely was recognized for eight years of special education service at Central Elementary; the presenter praised her responsiveness and mentoring work. Clara E. Coleman School named Scott Gavin its teacher of the year, with remarks emphasizing his classroom engagement, student relationships and coaching contributions at Glen Rock High School.
Administrators also highlighted Olivia Sluka (Glen Rock Middle School educational services professional of the year), Mara Siegel (Glen Rock High School teacher of the year) and Frank Klump (high-school education specialist and governor’s award recipient). The district noted programmatic innovations linked to several honorees, such as a multi-sensory phonics pilot and a partnership to develop a TV-studio camera rig.
The board took photos with recipients and thanked families and colleagues who attended. The recognitions were presented before the board moved to business items later in the meeting.
