The Abbot Public Library Board of Trustees met April 6, 2026, at the library (with Zoom access) and reviewed the director’s FY27 budget proposal, including three override scenarios that would restore differing levels of staffing and service hours.
Director Kimberly A. Grad presented a balanced-budget staffing plan and three “Tier 1–3” override scenarios under consideration, saying the scenarios would change weekly service hours (25, 45 and 52 hours in the respective scenarios) and could require reducing staff by eight positions in one option to return overall staffing to 24 positions. Grad described the plans as draft pending consultations with the Town Manager and Town Administrator, and said the library would pursue certification waivers with the state in the balanced and Tier 1 scenarios.
The board discussed public outreach tied to the proposals. The Abbot Public Library Foundation (APLF) will conduct a community survey and sponsor an awareness campaign with Hyphenate; the director said the survey will inform communications ahead of the Town Meeting. The board also noted upcoming municipal dates: Town Meeting on Monday, May 4, 2026, and the town election on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
Trustees reviewed operational and program updates reported by the director. Highlights included a March surge in door counts to 8,074 (an increase of 2,915 over February), a total of 18,846 items checked out in March (11,864 print and 7,162 digital), 9,311 patrons on file, and 34 participants across six Makerspace programs. The director announced that Children’s Librarian Marcia Cannon will retire May 2, 2026.
Board members also reviewed building and maintenance matters. The town supplied contact information for a plumber and electrician; Rustic Fire Prevention completed sprinkler work on March 9 and requested replacement of a corroded 4-inch OS&Y valve, a repair the chair described as reasonable given the valve’s cost and installation time.
Votes at a glance - Approval of March 2, 2026 minutes: motion seconded and approved by roll call (Gary Amberik, Kathy Barker, Marjorie Norman, David Ross, Kathleen Waslov, John Williams — all Yes). - Payment approvals: the board moved, seconded and approved payment of $75 from the Carten Gallery Fund for Marblehead Festival of Arts youth writing contest prizes, and $2,795.82 to Rustic Fire Prevention for the valve replacement (funded from the override account); roll call vote recorded all Yes. - Adjournment: motion carried by roll call; meeting adjourned at 6:50 p.m., followed by entry into executive session.
The board noted additional meetings will be scheduled to prepare materials and public messaging related to the budget override proposals; Director Grad will attend upcoming Town warrant and Select Board meetings. The next regular board meeting is scheduled for May 11, 2026.
