Keller ISD board limits superintendent search to internal candidates, requires district residency

The Keller ISD Board of Trustees voted 5–0 on May 20 to post the district’s vacant superintendent position for internal applicants only, the Keller ISD board chair said.

The board convened a special meeting at 10:00 a.m., entered executive session at about 10:03 a.m. under the Texas Open Meetings Act to consult on legal and personnel matters, and returned at 10:23 a.m. The chair then moved “that the vacant position of Keller ISD superintendent be posted seeking internal applicants only with the minimum qualifications as discussed in closed session to include superintendent certification, principal experience, central office experience, and must live in the district,” and the motion was approved after a second. The vote was recorded as 5–0, with Trustees Kelly and Radcliffe absent.

The action follows a closed executive session the board called under the Texas Open Meetings Act, citing Texas Government Code §551.071 for legal consultation and §551.074 for personnel matters, according to the chair’s announcement at the meeting. No public speakers had signed up during the public-comment period, and the board took no public testimony before voting.

Trustee Washington offered an invocation at the start of the meeting. After approving the superintendent-posting motion, the board moved to adjourn and ended the special meeting at 10:25 a.m.
