Tree Board discusses community clean-up, tree inventory and pruning schedule tied to Tree City USA

At the June 22 meeting, Anaconda Deer Lodge County Tree Board members discussed plans to coordinate a community clean-up and tree-care activities to support the county’s Tree City USA designation.
Board member Sean Steinebach reviewed past activities, describing an annual mid-May community clean-up that included tree planting and pruning and sometimes used inmate work crews for assistance. The board discussed coordinating a future clean-up with National Arbor Day on April 30, 2027, to help maintain Tree City USA status and continued eligibility for related grants.
Janice Haggin, a guest, suggested involving local youth in future events; Steinebach noted a scheduling limitation: inmate work crews and youth volunteers could not participate at the same time. Steinebach also said it was too late in the year to prune trees and that pruning is ideally done in spring before bud break. He emphasized the need for a county tree inventory and said hazardous trees should be addressed promptly; he added that county maintenance authority applies only to trees located within the county right-of-way.
The board discussed these programmatic priorities as planning items; no budget allocations or formal grant applications were made at the meeting. The board recorded informational items including a report that Bob Anderozzi is searching for a 1989 time capsule placed above the cemetery.
The board will revisit these items, including draft bylaws and a draft ordinance, at its next meeting on July 17, 2026.
