Chairman Humphrey presented Resolution 2026 R01 to the Finance Committee to appropriate $41,821.23 to cover change orders 2 and 3 for the Barbicus Construction Co. Inc. contract on the Grama Road turn-lane project at Green Elementary School.
Humphrey said the change orders were necessary because two sanitary manholes needed to be adjusted to grade and the cumulative change exceeded the contract's 10% threshold. "As a result of that change order in excess of the 10%, this legislation provides for an increase of $41,821.23," he said.
A city staff member confirmed the summary and a council member explained that encountering soft soils and underpinning or undercutting with better material is a common reason for additional costs in roadway construction. Committee members signaled support and Humphrey said he will make a motion at the regular council meeting to appropriate the funds.
No formal vote on the appropriation was taken in committee; action will be requested at the council meeting.
