Principals report enrollment, new playground installation and TREP$ marketplace events

At the Dec. 10 meeting the Closter Board of Education heard detailed reports from school principals highlighting enrollment numbers, upcoming events and building improvements.
Hillside Elementary Principal Dianne Smith reported current enrollment of 607 students and said two additional students are expected to join on Jan. 5. She said Trimester One ended Dec. 4 and that families will be notified when the Parent Portal opens for grade viewing. Smith said playground demolition is complete and installation has begun for a new Pre-K through Grade 1 play area; the project, she said, is funded primarily by a grant and should be finished in about two weeks.
Smith also described recent safety programming: a Pedestrian, Bike, and Scooter Safety assembly provided by EZ Ride for grades K— and a safety-poster contest with roughly 25 entries so far. She highlighted classroom learning, the AAP program concluding Dec. 18, and planned drills with the Closter Police Department.
Tenakill Middle School Principal Christine Cipollini reported enrollment at 588 students and invited the board and community to the TREP$ Marketplace on Dec. 18 (6'0p.m.) where sixth-grade entrepreneurs will sell student-created products. Cipollini also noted band, orchestra and chorus concerts planned for Dec. 11, recent student-led conferences for grades 5—, and a debate team that has already recorded strong results this season.
Superintendent Vincent McHale thanked outgoing trustee Jia Dee Li for her service to the district and reminded the public that schools will be closed for winter recess Dec. 24 through Jan. 4, with reopening on Jan. 5, 2026.
