Closter board approves $1.78 million in bills, greenlights $8,980 change order for boiler project

The Closter Board of Education on Dec. 10 approved payments totaling $1,775,569.59 for vendor bills covering Nov. 20–Dec. 10, 2025, and authorized a change order for the Hillside Elementary boiler replacement project.
Board members voted unanimously to approve two payment runs: $817,082.74 for Nov. 20–30 and $958,486.85 for Dec. 1–10, records show. The board then approved Change Order #5 to the CJ Vanderbeck and Sons contract for Hillside Elementary to install new testable backflow devices at a cost of $8,980.00; the cost will be deducted from the allowance included in the base bid.
During discussion, board member Janine Micera asked where the change-order funds would come from. Superintendent Vincent McHale and Business Administrator Floro Villanueva said the expense will be covered by the referendum project allowance and followed a town inspector's recommendation to upgrade existing devices to a testable design unit.
The motion passed by roll call (Yeas: Shih, Lee, Argenziano, Paldi, Micera, Choi; Nays: none). The board also approved routine monthly financial reports and budget certifications for November 2025 as required under state regulations (NJSA 18A:17-9 and NJAC 6:20-2.13).
The board packet lists CJ Vanderbeck and Sons, Inc. as the contractor for the boiler replacement; the change order specifically covers backflow-device replacement at both Tenakill Middle School and Hillside Elementary School. No additional contingency or schedule impacts were stated at the meeting.
The board will receive the full auditor's ACFR at the Organization Meeting on Jan. 7, 2026, when Audit Partner Jeffrey Bliss is scheduled to present the complete report.
