Council approves facade-improvement funding for Tejas Burger Joint relocation and rebrand to Wise Guys

Staff presented Resolution No. 20 26 16 at council's request for Tejas Dragon Companies LLC, the owner/operator of Tejas Burger Joint. The proposal covers renovations at 306 Market Street as the business transitions to a new concept called Wise Guys (pizza, burgers and wings). Staff reported a total project investment of about $136,000 with eligible interior costs of $96,771 and eligible exterior costs of $10,800; funding, if approved, is "up to $40,000" and would be paid on actual receipts after the project is completed and inspected.
The business retention and expansion committee and the TEDC board recommended the request in February, staff said. The project was described as expected to create 8 to 12 new full-time jobs and four to six part-time positions. Council emphasized that grant funds are not disbursed until the project is finished, permits are obtained and a certificate of occupancy is provided.
Council moved and approved the resolution on first reading by a 5-0 vote. Staff noted that if the project were red-tagged or otherwise not completed to code the business would not receive reimbursement.
The council took no additional action beyond approving the resolution on first reading; final disbursement of funds will require submittal of receipts and evidence of completion.
