Phoenix-Talent school board reviews governance self-assessment, identifies data use and cultural responsiveness as priorities

Kristen, the meeting facilitator, led directors through a research‑based 12‑standard board self‑assessment and asked members to reflect on strengths, areas for improvement and possible board goals.
Kristen said the board's highest scores were in roles and responsibilities, culture and climate, and leadership/systems thinking; lower scores or incongruence emerged in innovation/creativity, cultural responsiveness and the use of disaggregated data for continuous improvement. "If you are talking more about these kinds of things, that in and of itself is improvement," she observed, urging the board to view increased, intentional discussion as progress.
Board members discussed practical follow-ups: establishing a board progress scorecard with two to three annual performance targets and quarterly check‑ins; implementing a program‑impact review cycle that evaluates at least two district programs per year for measurable student outcomes; and adding three quick equity/impact questions to policy reviews so high‑impact items receive a focused equity lens. Members emphasized the need to define the data they want to see in advance of program reviews and to be sensitive to staff when reviewing program performance.
No formal board decisions were taken at the workshop; Kristen recommended the board adopt at least one measurable goal and offered to follow up on whichever option the board selects.
