Elementary principals praise 3-mil funding that supports reading, STEAM and intervention positions

Two Fairhope elementary schools described to the council on March 9 how the city’s 3-mil allocation funds staff and programs.
Fairhope West’s principal Jenny Davis (S2) presented a short video and examples of classroom collaboration and problem-solving and thanked the council and citizens for support; councilmembers praised the school’s state report-card score of 99.
J. Larry Newton principal Tanya Harrelson (S8) and her team provided enrollment and staffing numbers—733 students and 122 employees—explaining that 12 positions are funded by the 3-mil allocation, including seven certified teachers (STEAM teacher, reading coach, math coach, intervention coordinator and three part-time certified instructors) and five support staff. Newton’s STEAM teacher Laura Ruth Hunter (S9) described 45-minute rotational STEAM lessons that include building and coding challenges; Amanda Smith (S10) and instructional coaches (S11, S12) explained targeted intervention groups and professional-development support.
Officials and councilmembers thanked teachers and staff and invited council visits to the campuses.
