Altenburg District #48 board approves budget outlook and school calendar; summer preschool canceled

The Altenburg District #48 Board of Education on Feb. 13 approved the district's budget outlook with amendments and adopted the 2025-26 school calendar, accepted a lawn-mowing bid and several personnel items, and announced there will be no summer preschool this year after receiving only two letters of interest.
The board โ Andrew Lichtenegger, Jessica Hecht, Lindsay Palisch, Vice President Cary Roth, Amy Welker, Brittany Hecht and Richard Sachs โ convened at 6:32 p.m. in the Art/Music Room. Cary Roth moved to accept the meeting agenda as amended; Amy Welker seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Richard Sachs moved, and Amy Welker seconded, to approve the district's budget outlook with amendments as presented; the motion passed 7-0. The board also approved open and closed session minutes from Jan. 9, 2025, on unanimous votes.
In financial business, the board approved the February 2025 bills as presented. Brittany Hecht moved and Cary Roth seconded the motion; the tally was recorded as 6-0 with Richard Sachs abstaining.
On personnel and staffing, Lindsay Palisch moved and Brittany Hecht seconded to add Allison Haertling to the district's substitute list; that motion passed 7-0. Discussion about the special education (SPED) position resulted in a decision to reopen recruitment; Superintendent/administrator-level staff member Debbie Haertling said she will reopen the position and Kimberly Lohmann will provide a SPED report at the board's March meeting.
The board accepted a lawn-mowing bid from Ethan Sachs. The district recorded two bid options: $55 for front and side mowing of the main campus (plus specified perimeter areas) and $75 for mowing the entire main campus including the playground and perimeter areas. The motion to accept the bid passed 6-0 with Richard Sachs abstaining.
The board distributed flyers for upcoming Altenburg Public School events and named Lindsay Palisch and Amy Welker to the committee that will update the Continuous School Improvement Plan (CSIP). A letter from Kimberly Bauer about the Afterschool Care Program was presented and entered into the record.
