The Altenburg District #48 Board of Education met in open session on March 13, 2025, in the district Art/Music Room and approved a series of budget and calendar changes ahead of the 2025–26 school year. Board members voted unanimously to approve the budget outlook and amendments and to amend the school calendar to make April 22, 2025, a make-up day.
Board member Brittany Hecht moved and Board member Richard Sachs seconded a motion to raise preschool fees for 2025–26 to $26 per day, with $2 charged for before-school care and $2 for after-school care. The board approved the fee increase 5-0. The board also voted to keep the board-paid insurance contribution at $675 and to offer all available plans to staff for the 2025–26 year; that motion carried 5-0.
In routine business the board approved the March bills with special handling for a $135 charge for Ethan Sachs. Board member Richard Sachs moved to approve the March bills as presented except for the $135 Ethan Sachs charge; that motion passed 4-0 with board member Jessica Hecht recorded as abstaining. Separately, Board member Brittany Hecht moved to approve the $135 Ethan Sachs bill; the motion passed 4-0 with Richard Sachs recorded as abstaining.
The board considered policy and program matters. Board members voted 5-0 not to approve MCE Policy 5550. Superintendent Debbie Haertling presented the MAP testing schedule for the upcoming testing window, and the board reviewed a letter from Jill Barber regarding the Parents as Teachers program. The board also reviewed a letter from staff member Kimberly Lohmann about special education (SPED) and discussed those matters in the open session; staffing for 2025–26 was noted as discussed in closed session.
Superintendent Haertling reported projected enrollment of 96 students in grades K–8 for 2025–26. The board asked members to email edits to the 2025–26 student handbook to the superintendent by March 31 for discussion at the April meeting. Playground Committee member Brittany Hecht reported the committee met March 10 and expects to present a vision board to the PTO in April and to the board in May.
