Mayor Seeks County Match for Emergency Generator Grant at Pell City Building

Pell City's mayor asked the St. Clair County Commission during a work session to consider matching funds for a $25,000 grant awarded to install an emergency generator at the city's municipal building to support emergency operations.
"We have gotten a small grant... Put in a generator for emergency at our building because we don't have 1," the mayor said, adding that the generator would support the fire and police departments and serve as backup during tornadoes.
County staff reviewed the project cost and said the total was about $99,500. The chair outlined the county's grant-matching policy and explained how the county match would be computed: after subtracting the grant amount, the county would match a portion (the typical program match is up to 50% of eligible local share, subject to program limits).
Officials discussed an alternate near-term option: the Bell City Sheriff's Department may be able to donate a large diesel-driven generator that could cover the building, but staff cautioned about the maintenance and upkeep costs for large standby generators.
The mayor said the city appreciated any help; commissioners said they would place the matter on Tuesday's formal agenda for a decision on matching funds.
