District hears multi-site construction updates as projects advance toward spring and summer milestones

At its March meeting, the Westfield-Washington Schools board received progress reports from construction managers overseeing multiple district projects, including Midland Crossing, Shamrock Springs, Cool Creek Elementary (conversion work), the new transportation facility, and a major new school slated to open in August 2027.
Scott Wells (Garbon) said Midland Crossing’s exterior masonry is complete and interior finishing work—drywall finishing, ceiling grid and resilient flooring—remains. He reported a project contingency that started at $1.9 million with $477,000 spent to date. Shamrock Springs still requires exterior brick work and above-ceiling rough-ins as weather permits.
Jerry Rolfson (Performance Services) described nearing completion at Cool Creek’s Phase 1 work (special education suites and the media center), with an intent to turn the space over around spring break and use the break to finish punch-list items. He said site work will continue, including removal of an old pump house and underground stormwater detention installation.
Matt Grossman (Meyer Najim) updated the board on the transportation facility’s sanitary lateral and site utility work, noting the 36-inch water main from Ditch Road is installed and undergoing testing and flushing. The transportation site features canopies for 180 buses with room for future expansion; remaining tasks include top-coat asphalt and remaining site punch-list items once weather allows.
Brian Kelly (reporting for Hagerman Construction) reviewed geothermal lateral installs, roofing progress, interior mechanical installations and reported the large new school is roughly 60% complete, with contingency utilization and allowances at modest levels. He said the project is ahead of schedule and targets an August 2027 opening.
Board members asked clarifying questions about temporary storage of buses, contingency usage percentages and inspection timelines. Construction managers noted short-term weather impacts but outlined 30–60 day lookahead tasks including utility tie-ins, punch-list work, landscaping and continued interior finishes.
No formal actions were taken on these updates; administrators and contractors will return with monthly progress reports and any recommendations requiring board action.
