District recognizes 40 students with New York State Seal of Biliteracy

The Board of Education recognized 40 students who earned the New York State Seal of Biliteracy during tonight's meeting, a presenter said. The district listed recipients who demonstrated language proficiency through coursework, assessments, a written essay, a project and an in-language presentation.
"We are very proud to award the New York State Seal of Biliteracy to 40 outstanding recipients," Judy Diaz said as she read the full list of students and the languages in which each earned the seal. Diaz noted that four students earned the seal in two world languages.
The Seal of Biliteracy signals that students met the district and state requirements for language proficiency, Diaz said, and the district will place a seal on recipients' diplomas to distinguish the award. Recipients named included students who earned the seal in Spanish, French and Dutch; among those read aloud were Samuel Berg (French and Spanish), Mara Hector (French and Dutch) and Lucas Porta (French and Spanish).
After the list was completed, the presenter asked recipients to meet outside for a group photograph. The recognition session closed with the board thanking staff, teachers and program coordinators who supported the language and capstone work that qualifies students for the award.
The ceremony was presented as part of the regular board meeting; the district said this is the first year the district has offered these seals at scale and intends to continue the programs that produced this cohort.
