University of Alabama outlines rural medical training program and asks for local support on housing, clinical placements

Dr. Stewart described the Community Integrated Experience and Rural Medical Scholars Program, noting the county has hosted medical students’ clinical rotations for several years and that the program is expanding to include a psychiatry residency starting this summer. "We at the University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences have been, working with, medical students from the Harrison School of Medicine for over 50 years," Dr. Stewart said.
The university is asking for continued local support for student housing and stronger coordination with local preceptors and health providers. Commissioners discussed past budgeted housing funds that were not spent, options to reinsert modest housing support in this year’s budget, and the potential for students to assist with jail intake classification and opioid‑related care under supervision.
No formal commitment was made; staff agreed to reengage with university contacts, verify current housing arrangements and present potential budget or in‑kind support options in a future agenda packet.
