City administrator reports recycling container removal, gas-line repair and planned hiring

City Administrator Cynthia Wagner updated the Smithville Board of Aldermen on several operational matters at the Dec. 16 meeting.
Wagner said Price Chopper asked that its on-site recycling containers be removed because of ongoing cleanup problems. She said two recycling dumpsters at City Hall remain available; GFL services those dumpsters on Thursdays, and staff asked residents not to leave recycling outside full containers. Wagner said staff is working with GFL to explore more frequent pickups and to identify additional recycling locations.
On public-works matters, Wagner reported that a gas-line strike on southbound Highway 169 is under repair and work is expected to be complete by the end of the week, no later than Friday. She thanked the public for its patience as crews complete repairs.
Wagner also provided a personnel update: conditional offers were extended for five positions, background checks are in progress, and the city anticipates onboarding the new employees around or shortly after the New Year. She noted the Senior Center received recognition at the Northland Professionals in Aging Awards Ceremony for its programming. City Hall will be closed for the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
