City outlines summer programs and $1.7 million playground upgrade plan

Jonathan Zamora, the city’s Community Hub Director, told the council on May 18 that Peekskill’s Summer 2026 schedule will include day camps, teen travel programs, a concert and movie series, and four public watch parties tied to the FIFA World Cup. "So I'm very excited, and thrilled to be here this evening to showcase our summer 2026 programs and events," Zamora said.
Zamora said the city is in its 53rd year of senior nutrition services, serving about 70 seniors a day, and is expanding afternoon programming and intergenerational farm‑to‑table events. He outlined available youth slots — 60 for day camp, nine for teen travel and 15 for creative arts — and urged residents to register early.
The presentation emphasized park and playground work the city is preparing to begin. Zamora said Peekskill received a $1,700,000 state grant for playground resurfacing and that staff expects a contract as soon as late summer. "Because McKinley Park Playground has been closed for 2 years, that is our highest priority to get that built out," he said. In anticipation of the contract, crews have started removing outdated components and installing poured‑in‑place surfacing and inclusive play elements at several sites.
City staff have implemented monthly playground assessments and will continue annual third‑party inspections, Zamora said, and are tracking time and costs for vandalism repairs in parks. He also listed special events — a July 4 fireworks festival, a 45‑piece West Point Band performance in August, a parade and family festival on June 20 — and directed residents to DestinationPeakskill.org for the full calendar.
Zamora closed by describing proposed visitor programming, including a weekend shuttle linking downtown, the train station and the riverfront, pending funding and IDA review. The city will publicize registration and event details as dates approach.
The council thanked Zamora and staff; no formal vote was taken on program spending during the presentation.
