Grimes adopts small wireless facilities ordinance to align with state law

The Grimes City Council adopted ordinance 810 on March 10 to establish local standards and a permitting framework for small wireless facilities in the city right-of-way.
Kevin Hensley, public works director, presented the ordinance during its second reading and said it implements state siting requirements while creating a clear local process for placement of small-cell equipment and contractor coordination. “This establishes a new chapter in the Grimes code ordinances,” Hensley said, adding the city borrowed provisions from adjacent communities to create the framework.
Council members moved for final passage, waived the third reading and approved the ordinance by roll call. The mayor noted the city must allow small-cell placement under state law and said the local code simply provides a framework so siting occurs on the city’s terms where possible.
The ordinance will be recorded per city code and its effective date will follow the publication and filing requirements in the municipal code.
