Board approves conflict-of-interest policy, reviews bylaws and other policy updates

The North Adams Community Schools board approved an update extending conflict-of-interest rules to teachers and support staff and reviewed a slate of policy changes and legislative highlights.

A motion to approve the consent agenda — including routine items presented — was moved and seconded and carried. Later in the meeting administrators presented conflict-of-interest language that mirrors existing provisions for administrators and board members, and the board approved that policy with a recorded outcome of 6–0.

Administrators also briefed members on several informational items tied to recent legislation: proposed bylaw updates (including lowering the candidacy age from 21 to 18 and clarifying board reimbursement language); flexibility in staff-evaluation models to give districts more options; and a rewritten suicide awareness and prevention policy (policy 5350) that emphasizes connecting students to counselors and community mental-health partners rather than only static web resources.

Board members discussed drug and alcohol testing options for commercial driver's-license holders (bus drivers), including whether baseline breath/blood testing at hire or only post-incident testing is appropriate; no final decision was made. Transportation issues were also flagged: administrators presented a transportation report that shows bus replacement costs have risen sharply in recent years.
