Houston County accepts literacy grant, adopts election emergency plan

Houston County commissioners approved two administrative items at the meeting: acceptance of a SMIF early childhood literacy grant and adoption of the county's 2026 election emergency plan.
Public health staff explained the SMIF grant supplies 225 books intended for distribution to WIC families and families enrolled in evidence-based home visiting programs. "We applied in for and received the early childhood literacy grant... we're receiving 225 books to hand out to our... WIC families and families that are enrolled in our evidence based home visiting program," the public health representative said. Commissioners moved and seconded acceptance of the grant and approved it by voice vote.
On the election emergency plan, staff (Molly) told commissioners the plan updates contact information and outreach procedures the state requires to have on file with the office of the Secretary of State; the plan will be resubmitted with an updated version within two years. A motion to adopt the plan was made and approved by voice vote.
These actions were taken as part of routine county business; the board also approved the meeting agenda and previous minutes earlier in the session.
