Student representatives propose podcast, leadership conference and ask board for modest funds

Student representatives told the board they heard consistent student interest in more interactive "high school and beyond" lessons, expanded career-exploration opportunities and better communication with teachers during a recent Speak2 outreach.

A student representative outlined two next steps: a district outreach podcast they called "Past the Mic" to increase anonymous and accessible student input, and a leadership conference to train student officers and advisors. The students said pilot outreach (a tabling event) drew strong participation and suggested modest costs for materials, gas reimbursement for travel to other schools, basic editing tools and conference catering.

"Some students really wanted job shadows, like, more job shadow ... internship opportunities," one student representative said, urging the board to support outreach that would make those options more visible.

Board members asked practical questions about venue and funding sources; a board member suggested the district staff would work to identify whether ASB, an ASB grant, or another source could cover costs. The students proposed holding the conference in the school library or, if funds allow, a larger venue.

Why it matters: The proposals reflect active student engagement with district programs and ask for relatively small resource allocations (tabling materials, gas, editing software and light catering) to scale outreach into middle and elementary schools.

Next steps: District staff said they will explore potential funding sources and report back to the student reps and board.
