Shrewsbury aldermen approve medical director agreement with Washington University; table training-center permit

The vote advances an agreement described in the ordinance as a medical director contract that will attach Washington University’s professional services to the City of Shrewsbury Fire Department. Also on the agenda, the board tabled second and final passage of Bill No. 4036, a special-use permit request for the Central Core Fire Training Center Commission to construct and operate a training and recreation facility at 4224 Carr Lane Court. Alderperson Beth Parker moved to table the ordinance to the Feb. 11 meeting; Alderperson Bette Welch seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
The board approved first readings of two other ordinances: Bill No. 4038, which would revise the city’s personnel manual to reflect recent statutory changes in employment law, and Bill No. 4039, authorizing a collective bargaining agreement with the Shrewsbury Fire Department shop of IAFF Local 2665. Both first-reading motions were approved unanimously.
Under new business Mayor Mike Travaglini appointed Mike Schmelzle to the Board of Adjustment. Alderperson Bette Welch moved to confirm the appointment; Alderperson Beth Parker seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
There were no presubmitted written citizen comments and no members of the public spoke during the hearing portion. The meeting adjourned after a motion by Alderman Grant Diel and a second by Alderman Ben Stark. The board set its next meeting for Feb. 11, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.
