Lakota schools among state 'Science of Reading' champions, district says

Dr. Whiteley told the Lakota Local Board on March 23 that several district schools were selected as Governor’s Science of Reading Champions, a statewide recognition for demonstrating implementation of evidence‑based reading strategies.
‘‘Of the 109 schools selected across the state, we had Cherokee Elementary, Creekside Early Childhood, Endeavor Elementary, Heritage Early Childhood, Independence Elementary and Union Elementary,’’ Dr. Whiteley said, linking the awards to the district’s recent ELA curriculum and teacher professional development.
Recipients will receive a school banner and recognition on the ODE website. Dr. Whiteley said district curriculum staff recommended k–6 buildings apply and submitted descriptions and supporting data that demonstrated the strategies in classrooms.
Board members congratulated staff and noted the awards as validation of recent investments in curriculum and training. The announcement was presented as an informational student achievement report; no board action on the awards was required at the meeting.
The district emphasized the awards reflect both instructional changes and student progress and encouraged families to look for further updates on implementation and outcomes.
