The Somers Central School District Board of Education on March 17 approved the appointment of Thomas (Tommy) Albano as director of physical education, health and athletics, effective March 18, 2026. The resolution grants credit for time served as interim director beginning Sept. 17, 2025, and sets pay pro rata on an annual salary of $160,000.
Board members and the superintendent's office praised Albano's work as interim director. A district official who introduced the recommendation said the hiring process included community, staff and committee feedback and highlighted Albano's four years of service in multiple district roles and 15 years of coaching experience. "I will recommend Thomas Tommy Albano as our next permanent director," the official said, outlining Albano's degrees and certifications.
Albano had earlier presented recognitions for winter athletics, awarding scholar-athlete team certificates across gymnastics, basketball, track, bowling, cheer, wrestling, hockey, skiing and swim programs and naming individual student honorees. Board members congratulated teams and student leaders and thanked coaches, custodial and transportation staff for supporting athletics and student success.
The appointment was moved and seconded and approved by voice vote. The board paused briefly afterward for a photo and refreshments before resuming the remainder of the agenda.
Next steps: Albano assumes the permanent role immediately upon board approval and will continue district athletic program oversight; the administration will post personnel and salary information as required by district rules.
